What respite really means
While your mom or dad is with us, you can go to work, sleep, see your own doctor or simply have a quiet morning. They are safe, fed and engaged, and we bring them home in the afternoon. Families tell us the biggest change is in the evenings: less tension, more stories to share.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Adult Day Health Care and adult day care?
Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) includes health services such as nursing oversight, therapy and care planning, in addition to activities and meals. Social adult day care is activities only. Sunland is a licensed ADHC center.
Is it really free?
For eligible Medi-Cal members, yes. ADHC is covered under a benefit called CBAS with no copays. See the Eligibility and Cost page for the three-question check.
My mother has dementia. Is Sunland right for her?
Many participants live with memory loss. Small groups, a predictable routine and staff who know each person help most people settle in within a couple of weeks. Come for a tour and tell us about her; we will be honest about fit.
My father does not speak English. Will he be comfortable?
Our staff speak English, Armenian, Russian and Spanish [TBD], and activities are run in the languages of the group, not only in English.
What does a typical day look like?
Breakfast at 8:30, exercise and orientation, cognitive games or a lecture, music or arts, lunch at noon, activities of choice, a snack and home by 2:00. See the A Day at Sunland page for the full schedule.
Can we try one day first?
Yes. After enrollment, many families start with one or two days a week and add days as their loved one gets comfortable.
What should my parent bring?
Comfortable clothes and shoes, glasses and hearing aids, any medication that must be taken during the day with instructions from the doctor, and a sweater. We supply everything else.
What happens if there is a medical concern during the day?
Staff monitor participants throughout the day. If something changes, we contact you and the physician, and we call emergency services if needed.
