How to talk to a parent about attending a day program

Most parents say no the first time. Here is how families in Sun Valley get past the first conversation without a fight.

Almost every family we meet tells us the same story: the adult child is ready, the parent is not. “I am not old enough for that.” “I do not need babysitting.” “I am fine at home.”

That reaction is normal, and it is rarely about the program itself. It is about independence, pride and fear of the unknown. Here is what has worked for families at Sunland.

Start with what they miss, not what they need

Parents hear “you need supervision” and shut down. They respond very differently to “there is a choir on Mondays” or “they play backgammon after lunch.” Lead with the activity you know they used to enjoy: music, cards, cooking talk, a lecture, a walk.

Make the first visit about you

“Come with me to see this place, I want your opinion” works better than “I signed you up.” A tour puts your parent in the role of the judge rather than the patient. Many of our participants first came “to look,” stayed for lunch and asked when they could come back.

Use a trusted third voice

A doctor, a priest or pastor, a friend who already attends, or a social worker. When the suggestion comes from outside the family, it is not a power struggle.

Start small

One day a week is a reasonable first step. Most families add days within a month. Nobody has to commit to five days on day one.

Be honest about your own needs

Parents who would never accept help for themselves will often accept it for their children. “I worry about you all day at work, and I cannot keep doing that” is a fair thing to say.

What to expect in the first two weeks

The first few days can be quiet. By the second week most participants have a table they sit at, a person they talk to and an activity they look forward to. If it is not working after a month, tell us; we will adjust the plan or say honestly that another setting might fit better.

If you would like help with the first conversation, call us at (818) 570-7771. We are happy to speak with your parent directly, in their language.
