Medi-Cal renewal: a checklist for keeping coverage active
A lapsed Medi-Cal renewal is the most common reason a participant has to pause the program. Here is how to stay ahead of it.

Adult Day Health Care is paid for through Medi-Cal. If Medi-Cal lapses, so does the authorization for the program, the meals and the van. Renewals are annual and the paperwork often arrives when nobody is expecting it.
Know the renewal month
Los Angeles County sends a renewal packet about 60 days before the deadline. Write the month on the calendar. If you are not sure, call the county at (866) 613-3777 or check the BenefitsCal account.
Watch the mail, including the yellow envelope
Renewal packets and requests for information come in a distinctive envelope. Anything from the Department of Public Social Services should be opened the day it arrives.
Update the address every time it changes
Most lapses happen because the packet went to an old address. Report a move to the county within 10 days.
Gather documents before the packet arrives
- Proof of income (Social Security award letter, pension statement)
- Bank statements if requested
- Immigration or residency documents if they have changed
- Rent or mortgage information
Return the packet, even if nothing changed
Some households still need to sign and return the form. If the county already renewed automatically, you will receive a notice saying so.
If coverage lapses
You usually have 90 days to complete the renewal and restore coverage without reapplying. Call us as soon as you see a termination notice; our social worker can help you contact the county and the health plan.
